Leaky Boat Marketing is when a business focuses on plugging holes in a raft with one-off quick-fix marketing tactics to hide the fact that it is slowly sinking. They are reactive in that moment and ignore the long game.


Instead of looking at their overall marketing and messaging, they think spending a lot of money on ads, rebranding, or doing a big media push will solve their problems (lack of customers, low engagement, etc.). Guess what? Those tactics never work for a business that is already in trouble.  If the core problem is ignored then crew members will keep bailing water until the boat/business sinks.


What to know how to avoid Leaky Boat Marketing? Focus on strategy, a solid business plan, and clear messaging. Strategy and a solid business plan are the foundation of any business, and in this case, the frame for a sturdy boat. Now, visualize the sails opening on a boat. The sails are clear messaging. Clear messaging is what propels a brand or business forward.
